It was June 1, 1986, when Pat Bradley won her second major of the LPGA Tour season at what is now known as the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, becoming the third woman in the history of the LPGA to complete the Career Grand Slam in her first attempt.

The Massachusetts native’s celebration on that historic day was incredibly spirited, as Bradley threw her visor and jumped up and down after burying her birdie putt on the last hole to emerge victorious by one stroke over Patty Sheehan at the Jack Nicklaus Sports Center in Mason, Ohio.

“It’s great to make a little history. My number’s come up, and I’m riding it as long as I can,” Bradley was quoted as saying in a New York Times article on June 2, 1986, written by Gordon S. White, Jr.

Bradley joined LPGA Founder Louise Suggs and 82-time LPGA Tour winner Mickey Wright as the third Career Grand Slammer, an achievement that only four other women have accomplished since Bradley did so in 1986, a list that includes Juli Inkster, Karrie Webb, Annika Sorenstam and Inbee Park. Webb is the only athlete to ever have finished the Super Career Grand Slam, having won five different majors that were available during her LPGA Tour career.

Her KPMG Women’s PGA Championship victory was the fifth of six total major titles Bradley collected during her time as an LPGA Tour member, and it was the fourth different major she had won in her career, as Bradley had racked up two victories at the du Maurier Classic in 1980 and 1985, won the U.S. Women’s Open in 1981 and taken home the 1986 Nabisco Dinah Shore – what’s now known as The Chevron Championship – before her triumph in Ohio.

Bradley’s last major championship win also came in 1986 at the du Maurier Classic at Board of Trade Country Club in Ontario, Canada. She is one of four players who have won three majors in a single season, sitting alongside Babe Zaharias (1950), Mickey Wright (1961) and Inbee Park (2013), and is one of four athletes to win three or more majors consecutively, also alongside with the same aforementioned players.

Bradley earned her 31st and final LPGA Tour victory in 1995 at the HealthSouth Inaugural. She was the first player in LPGA history to reach $2 million, $3 million and $4 million in career earnings, and her official money totaled $5,291,624 by the time she stopped playing professional golf.

She is an LPGA Hall of Fame and World Golf Hall of Fame member, earned two Rolex Player of the Year awards in 1986 and 1991 and won the Vare Trophy those same years, which is given to the player with the lowest scoring average at the end of the season. Bradley is also famous for hitting the first tee shot at the inaugural Solheim Cup in 1990.
