Megan Khang is going to be seeing a lot of her own face at the next two LPGA Tour stops.

This week, Khang is back in Canada, where she captured her first career win in 2023, and next week, she returns to her native Massachusetts, where she serves as an unofficial tournament host at the FM Championship. Both tournaments have heavily utilized images of Khang in their promotional materials, and knowing these two events would mean a lot to her personally and professionally, she took the past two weeks off to get rested and refreshed so she can take on all that these two weeks entail.

“It's always nerve-wracking coming back to a tournament you have won. Obviously, you would like to do it again,” Khang said about seeing her face being used on the tournament signage in Canada. “It's definitely a little cool coming in and still seeing some spots where my face is. Still catches me off guard.”

On Thursday at the CPKC Women’s Open, Khang opened with a 5-under 66 in the morning wave to grab a share of the early lead, handling any pressure she might have been feeling to perform well again in Canada with ease. Khang went out in 34 and gave up just one bogey on the front nine before finding a spark on the back when she reached the par-3 10th hole, also known as “The Rink,” as the hole is designed to emulate a hockey arena.

“Started on 10 making a pretty good birdie putt. It's the ice rink hole this week, so I like to give people a little something to cheer for,” Khang said about the start of her back-nine charge. “I would've loved to make it (for birdie) on 18, but it just wasn't high enough. Pretty happy with the 5-under.”

Giving the fans something to cheer for also gave Khang a boost as she posted a bogey-free, 32 on her inward nine. The 27-year-old missed just two fairways and four greens and recorded 27 putts to get off to a solid start on day one at Mississaugua Golf and Country Club.

“Seeing Aphrodite (Deng) crushing it at 15, it's a little more motivation to want to do well,” Khang said about the 15-year-old amateur’s hot start. “But just stayed in my own bubble and really just kind of stayed patient. Was able to hit some pretty good wedge shots on the par 5s and thankfully capitalized and made a few longer putts as well.”

But Khang’s two-week break ahead of the CPKC Women’s Open wasn’t all about rest. She recently purchased a house and spent a lot of time nesting, trying to make it feel like home as much as possible. She also put in some work with her father, Lee, who has long been his daughter’s coach and often travels with her week-to-week on Tour. The duo focused on getting her game ready for two intense weeks competing on the LPGA Tour.

“Really just working on the mechanics with my dad, just reiterating to myself like, hey, there is no need to press,” Khang said about what she worked on during her two weeks off. “Just a little more course management in a sense of don't make silly mistakes. Bogeys are going to happen. Try to limit them in a sense of some bogeys are okay. Don't make the silly ones.”

Khang managed to keep her silly mistakes to a minimum on Thursday in Ontario. Her goal is to maintain that consistency and solid form going through the rest of this week and into next week’s trip to TPC Boston, where she has already gotten in a practice round ahead of the second edition of the FM Championship. But with her hometown still being a week away, Khang is doing her best to keep her sights set on the next 54 holes at the CPKC Women’s Open.

“Really just didn't want to overdo it because I knew coming in for these next two it was going to be a challenge of trying to grind on the golf course and hopefully doing well for a hometown event,” Khang said about her busy back-to-back weeks. “Really excited for that. Right now, trying to focus on the Canadian Open.”
